No. They aren't the same.
I have a friend who has for months condescendingly told me to "get ready" to learn what "hard work" really is.
He takes this stance based on his experience in grad school.
When I tell him I'm sleeping 3 hours a night, he says things like "Yep, sleeplessness will be your new best friend."
If I say, "I'm tired." He says, "I know what you are going through."
If I say, "I'm working all weekend." He says, "Make sure you have some fun."
He texts me and expects responses.
He doesn't understand why we can't hang out.
And I want to say, "Grad school is not law school. They are not the same. The work load is not the same. I am in week two of what is potentially my easiest quarter and I wake up at 6 every morning, even if I went to bed at 4 and start in on work and don't stop until I go to sleep at night. If I am cooking, eating, walking the dogs, driving, showering, peeing, I am working on law school work. The work load is different. In grad school they do not kick you out of the class for not being in your seat when the professor comes into the room, and if it happens more than once, you get kicked out of the class for the entire quarter. In grad school you aren't prohibited, that's right, prohibited, from getting a job. They are different experiences, you have not gone through what I am going through. I have maybe, maybe an hour to myself during the week and the 5 minutes it takes me to respond to you is precious, is gold to me. I don't have time for me. I definitely don't have time for you...and your patronizing. Your complete lack of understanding for where my life is right now."
Side note...last week sucked (this is when I realized how hard it was going to be. But I am definitely up for the challenge and already redesigning my life to fit this new understanding). My game plan to keep from having a week like last week is to get ahead in all of my classes this weekend. So far, definitely ahead of schedule!

Hang in there kid. I'm older than you so i can call you a kid. Sounds like you are going to make it through the part where they try to make people quit because it's "too hard". Hope we can see you soon down here in Austin town for some rock climbing or better yet, a wedding in the Land of Enchantment??? Ok then, back to work.
